How Do Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps do not generate heat, but extract it from one body of air and transfer it to another. Using the same principle as a fridge, gas is compressed and then allowed to expand extracting heat as it does so.

Even when the outside temperature is very cold heat pumps can extract heat energy and transfer it inside to create warmth. In summer the system works is in reverse, extracting heat from indoors and transferring it outside, creating a cooling effect.
